Goldstein College

Manifesting a sense of belonging through sporting, social, cultural, leadership and charitable activities.

Goldstein College dining hall - UNSW Accommodation people and events

Opened in 1964, Goldstein College was named after philanthropist Philip Goldstein, who made a substantial donation towards the building of both the college and the Goldstein Dining Hall. The original buildings (North and South Hall) housed 74 residents, separated by a courtyard. In 2014, the newly developed Kensington colleges were opened and Goldstein became home to 150 residents.

Overview

Goldstein is the smallest of the three Kensington colleges, lending itself to creating a very close-knit community. There’s a strong sense of belonging at Goldstein, manifesting in all sporting, social, cultural, leadership and charitable activities.

The college regularly involves itself in community-based charitable programs such as Shave for a Cure, Earth Hour and Headspace. On the sporting field Goldstein is extremely well represented and in the past has housed Olympians and national and state representatives in a variety of sports. The intercollege sports competition is fiercely contested and Goldstein swarms to the sidelines to cheer their fellow residents on.

Student support

You’ll be supported by an on-site team comprising of the Dean, Deputy Dean and a team of Resident Fellows (or RFs). Every floor has an RF, and their job is to provide academic guidance and pastoral support and ensure each resident is looked after.

Academically, we run peer-led study groups to support students adjust to the academic requirements of university study – in addition, we also run shared study sessions along with wellbeing programs co-ordinated by our Wellbeing Officer, helping to make the transition from high school to university a smooth one.

Testimonials

It is soooo worth it! I have met so many amazing people, had the convenience of class being a short walk away, and have had the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities and events I didn’t know existed!

Jennnifer Mcloughlin | Dean of Goldstein College

Hi I’m Jen McLoughlin I have worked at UNSW in a variety of roles since 1993. My key focus has always been Student Services and within Faculties as a support and adviser to students. I am a lifelong learner and have a BA Communications from UTS, a Masters of Asian studies from UNSW and a Graduate Diploma in Primary Education from Charles Darwin University. Through these studies I have developed an appreciation of the challenges of balancing life and study and the support we need at times to achieve our goals.

I am an incredibly positive person with a deep understanding and empathy for the student experience. I am committed to motivating you and providing you with the right environment to enjoy university life and complete your degrees and beyond.

Prudence Whiteley | Deputy Dean of Goldstein College

As the Deputy Dean, Pru is responsible for assisting Dean Jennifer in the daily management of the college, as well as fulfilling the role of Resident Fellow in terms of providing academic and pastoral support to a group of students.

Resident and Student Fellows

Resident Fellows (RFs) are staff members of UNSW and typically in their final years of study or already holding a degree. RFs live with the students on their floors and provide daily academic and pastoral support. RFs aren’t teachers, but they’re a little like a supportive older sibling with loads of experience to pass on and a willingness to help guide the residents.

A Student Fellows (SF) is assigned every year in Goldstein College. They’re a volunteer senior student whose role is to create and run a range of proactive wellbeing initiatives for the entire college. The SF works closely with the RF’s and Deputy Dean, ensuring the wellbeing of all residents is top of mind.
